Before you start changing your child’s diaper, ensure the following items are set up:
- Clean nappies or diapers
- A changing mat that you can lay on the bed or floor or a changing pad
- A change mat cover
- A clean, soft towel to wipe your baby
- A nappy rash cream to protect against rashes
- A disposable nappy liner or nappy sacks to toss out dirty diapers
- For cloth nappies, a wet bag to store soiled nappies
- Cotton wool or wipes
- A change of clothing
Caution: During a nappy change, never leave your baby unattended on a bed or change table. Ensure every item is within reach before you begin the process.
Tips for Changing your Baby’s Nappy
#1- Start by opening the dirty diaper/nappy and wipe from front to back using the front portion of the nappy. Tuck this under the baby’s bottom. The clean side should face up.
#2- Using a baby wipe, wipe the bottom again from front to back. Lift both legs gently with one hand while wiping with the other. If you need to wipe higher up, roll him or her to their side.
#3- Using a clean towel, pat the bottom dry. Leave it to air dry for a few minutes.
#4- Take a small amount of diaper barrier cream and apply it gently on the bottom.
#5- Take the used nappy and wet wipes and place it in the dirty nappy sack. If you’re using cloth nappies, place it in a wet to wash later.
#6- Place a fresh, new nappy under your baby and fit it over his or her tummy. Now baby is ready to go!
Additional Tips
If you’re using a cloth nappy, you might consider adding a waterproof liner. For pocket-style nappies, you will have to place an insert.
As you become an expert at changing your baby’s nappies, you may decide to do things differently. Consider giving your baby nappy-free time as well which will give their skin a chance to get exposed to air.
