Baby Sleep Habits: How to establish a healthy routine?
During first few weeks of life, an infant will wake up every two to three hours. He or she will require frequent nappy changes, feedings, etc. There is no specific time as to when your baby will fall asleep or wake up. Unfortunately, this can wreak havoc with a mother’s sleep cycle.
However, the following tips can help you teach your baby how to differentiate between night and day so that they begin to establish healthy sleep habits.
#1 Encourage frequent napping
In the first 8 weeks, an infant isn’t able to stay awake for more than two hours at a time. If you wait longer than this timeframe, he or she may get overtired and have even more difficulty falling asleep.
#2 Interact during the day
To help your child learn the difference between night and day, play with your baby while he’s awake in the daytime. Keep the room light on, turn on the radio and keep talking to your baby. Don’t minimize regular daytime noises such as the telephone ringing, television volume, etc. If he is falling asleep during feedings, wake him up.
#3 Avoid interaction at night
During the night, avoid playing with your baby. Keep the noise level very low and if possible turn off all the lights. It is perfectly okay to keep a dim night light on. You need to avoid talking to him as well. Very soon, he will start to understand that the night is for sleeping.
#4 Look for signs of tiredness
When you observe your baby rubbing his eyes, flapping his hands or pulling on his ears, it’s time to sleep. These are all common indicators of sleep. Very quickly you’ll become an expert and figure out your baby’s patterns and rhythms.
#5 Start putting baby to sleep when he begins to feel sleepy
By 6 weeks of age, give your baby the opportunity to fall asleep by him or herself. How? As soon as you observe the tell-tale signs of sleep, i.e. rubbing eyes, pulling ears, lay your baby down.
#6Establish a bedtime routine
During the first year of your baby’s life, a simple bedtime routine may include: changing your baby into a sleeper, reading a story or singing a lullaby and kissing him goodnight. It’s never too early to start this important routine.
Establishing good sleep habits from an early stage is imperative to a baby’s healthy growth and development.
