Helpful Tips For Shopping At A Baby Clothes Boutique

Between feeding, burping, soothing, changing and keeping your baby occupied, the last thing parents want to spend time on is how to shop for clothing at a baby clothes boutique. After all, there are so many variables to consider such as comfort, fit, material choice, colour, adaptability, etc. However by keeping the following shopping rules in mind, you will enjoy shopping for your little one:

Rule #1- Sizing

Sizing varies across brands and companies. The size of a baby clothing item is listed in bold on the inside label. There is a number listed on it, i.e. 3 or 3m, 12, 24, etc. The number indicates the age group it is suitable for. For example 3 or 3m indicates up to three months. This item is suitable for babies up to 3 months of age. Similarly, if a label reads ‘5 to 7 months’, it is appropriate for babies in this age category. The general rule to follow is purchase items that are one size up so that they last longer.

Rule #2 - Quantity

Babies tend to outgrow their clothing size very quickly. Keep in mind they’re growing every day so by the end of the month, they often outgrow their clothing. While shopping, purchase items in limited quantities in a particular size and keep rule #1 in mind when doing so.

Rule #3- Fabric

Always opt for soft and natural fabrics such as cotton and some cotton blends. Organic fabric is very soft as well. Babies have very sensitive skin so artificial materials are not recommended. In addition, after you purchase the item, cut off the inside label. This can irritate your baby and cause a rash.

Rule #4- Wear-ability

How easy is it to dress your baby in this particular item? Snapping buttons into place can be very frustrating. Zippers are always easy. Magnetic snaps are ideal as they don’t encounter zipper jams. Ensure the neck hole is stretchy so that you can easily slide it over your baby’s head.

Rule #5- Diaper Change

In the first year, you can expect to change many diapers. Clothing items should enable easy diaper changes. Many sleepers and bodysuits have easy snaps at the crotch that will help you easily unsnap and perform a diaper change. Avoid clothing items such as jump suits, hard denim or corduroy pants that need to be pulled down. Your baby will feel very irritated during the nappy change process.

Rule #6- Stretchy Pants

It’s tempting to want to dress your baby in cute jeans, dungarees and overalls but unless they are made from a stretchy material, your baby is not going to feel comfortable. It won’t be fun dressing your baby in it either!

Rule #7- General Safety Rules

When shopping for your baby’s clothing, there are some safety concerns you need to be aware of such as:

1) Choking hazards- buttons, bows, hooks, appliques and flowers are all choking hazards. It’s better to buy items without such decorative elements. If you must purchase an item with such embellishments, give it a good tug to ensure it is securely fastened.

2) Drawstrings- particularly on the waist or neck are a serious strangulation hazard. They can easily tangle around furniture or on playground equipment. Avoid drawstrings altogether. If you receive such an item as a gift, pull it out entirely before dressing your baby.

3) Avoid fancy embroidery pleats, tulle and ruching on the chest or around the collar, at least for the first year. All of these techniques can give your baby a serious rash.

4) Wash before wearing- all new clothing is treated with chemicals to crisp up the material. You must wash everything new before dressing your baby in it.
